READING — A reported assault at a residence on Main Street Saturday afternoon ended with a police officer shooting a man who allegedly had fled the home, police said, and who later died of his injuries.
Reading police responded at about 3:45 p.m. for a report of an assault involving that 43-year-old man and a household member, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
The alleged victim who called in the report was no longer at the home when officers arrived, the District Attorney’s Office said in a prepared statement Saturday night.
Officers were familiar with the location and had responded Friday night for a reported fight involving the same man. By the time officers arrived at the scene on Friday the man had fled. Police searched the area but could not locate him.
When they returned to the residence on Saturday, officers found the man allegedly involved in the dispute inside the home, which was dead-bolted from the inside. By the time officers gained access, the man had fled the home, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Multiple officers searched for the man, and at about 4:33 p.m. shots were fired by a Reading officer, wounding him. He was transported to Lahey Hospital […]
