Elderly woman beaten in Antioch still hospitalized; suspect identified

ANTIOCH — A 76-year-old Antioch woman beaten nearly to death by a relative over the weekend remains in a hospital, but police now believe she will live.

“She’s stable, but all our indications are that she’s going to survive,” Antioch police Sgt. John Fortner said Tuesday. “Whenever you are dealing with somebody of that age, that always plays a part in recovery. But the reports we’re getting are positive.”

Police on Tuesday arrested 44-year-old Charlie Burke, of Antioch, on suspicion of attempted murder. Police have not specified how the two were related, citing the investigation. Burke is also suspected of torture, mayhem, false imprisonment, elder abuse and evading officers during a brief chase, Fortner said.

Fortner said the crimes happened “over about a three-hour time span.”

Officers arrived at the woman’s home Saturday morning after receiving a call around 10:22 a.m. from a family member who thought she might be dead. The caller reported that Burke admitted assaulting the woman, possibly while under the influence of narcotics, Fortner said.
