Legislative aide resigns after arraignment on felony charges

ALBANY — Robert Nickol, who was arraigned Friday on two felonies and a misdemeanor related to alleged domestic violence, has resigned from his post as counsel for state Sen. Bill Larkin.

The Orange County Republican’s office announced Nickol’s departure on Tuesday.

Hours after Nickol’s arraignment Friday, Larkin’s office announced that he had been placed on paid administrative leave. Continuing that status would have required an application to the Senate secretary every 15 working days.

Nickol, 32, of Worcester, faces felony assault and strangulation charges as well as misdemeanor assault. He entered a plea of not guilty.

An Albany County grand jury indicted Nickol last week on the charges that he allegedly hit a woman on the leg with a television cord during a dispute. The attack caused pain, swelling and bruising, according to court documents.

The felony strangulation charge stems from a June 2015 incident that occurred in Albany.
