Man suspected of carrying handgun is shot through taxi window by police in County Durham

Police shot a man through the window of a taxi when he shouted at officers and refused to get out after reports he was brandishing a handgun.

The man was shot near the Masons Arms pub in Bishop Auckland, County Durham, about 10.46am on Friday and rushed to hospital.

Witnesses said the taxi, in which he was a passenger, stopped at a traffic light and was surrounded by armed police. He was given several warnings to get out of the car with his hands up but refused and shouted abuse at police, while the taxi driver escaped.
