Wolfeboro chiropractor pleads guilty to insurance fraud and witness tampering

Union Leader Correspondent David McCarthy of Alton Bay voluntarily surrendered his chiropractic license in 2015. OSSIPEE — A former Wolfeboro chiropractor, who permanently surrendered his license to practice in 2015, has pleaded guilty to insurance fraud and witness tampering and has been ordered to pay $44,560 in restitution.

David McCarthy, 62, of 562 Rattlesnake Island, Alton Bay, admitted that he fraudulently billed Cigna and Anthem for patient services he never provided. He further admitted that he called patients whose records were being audited as part of the investigation and told them to confirm, when questioned, that they went to all treatment visit dates that investigators asked them about.

Under the terms of a fully negotiated plea, Judge Amy Ignatius sentenced McCarthy to two 1- to 3-year state prison terms, both suspended on the condition of good behavior for three years and payment of restitution in full by Dec. 13. The sentences are to be served concurrently if imposed.
