Deputies search for man in Rand slaying

Kanawha County Sheriff Mike Rutherford speaks at a news conference Wednesday about a shooting death in Rand. Marian Janyne Chapman, 27, of South Charleston, was shot while she was on a front porch on Clemson Avenue around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. She later died at a hospital.

Police believe Gerard Malcolm Maxwell, 32, of Rand, shot her and fled in the vehicle. An altercation between Maxwell and Chapman allegedly occurred before the incident. Authorities don’t know what caused it. They believe the two knew each other before the incident occurred.

It’s unclear if there was another weapon was on the scene, Rutherford said. Other people were in the house during the time of the incident, but police believe the altercation was between Maxwell and Chapman.

Rutherford emphasized that they believe Maxwell is dangerous because he’s been involved in shootings before.

In January 2015, Maxwell was involved in a shooting with five other people where 80 shots were fired. He was initially charged with first-degree murder, but then the was sentenced with voluntary manslaughter.
