Two bills are being proposed in the county Legislature Wednesday to increase oversight and training for Child Protective Services workers who deal with kids with developmental disabilities, the Daily News has learned.

“We know that children with developmental disabilities are twice as likely to be abused, so we needed to look at how CPS responded and we found some things that could be changed now,” said Jennica Velasquez-Nill, an education advocate on the task force set up by Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone following the gruesome death of 8-year-old Thomas Valva. Michael Valva, was indicted along with his fiancee Angela Pollina, for the murder of his son, Thomas Valva. (James Carbone/Newsday / Pool) The autistic child was beaten and left to freeze to death inside his NYPD cop father’s Center Moriches garage on Jan. 17. His body temperature plummeted to a lethal 76 degrees during the frigid night, authorities said. The boy’s dad Michael Valva and his fiancée Angela Pollina were charged with murder a week later.

Over the course of two years at least 20 child abuse or neglect complaints were lodged against Valva by his estranged wife and educators at East Moriches school, where Thomas and his brothers Anthony, 10, and 6-year-old Andrew were students.
