A local event promoter and influential member of Orlando’s Puerto Rican community was arrested late Sunday after an underage girl accused him of repeated sexual abuse spanning several years, records show.

Obdulio Irizarry Jr., 38, is facing several counts related to sexual battery on a child as well as lewd or lascivious molestation of a victim over 12.

An affidavit shows someone close to the victim found text messages between Irizarry and the girl in which Irizarry asked her to lie in order to be alone with him. The teenage victim told the person who saw the messages that Irizarry had been sexually abusing her since she was 11.

The victim told an investigator with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office that Irizarry’s behavior toward her escalated from kissing and groping to rape, the affidavit said. She said Irizarry frequently coerced her into sexual encounters over several years, including as recently as early October.

Through entertainment company O.B.Y. Entertainment, Irizarry hosts a yearly entertainment event in Orlando called Las Justas, which is modeled after annual intercollegiate sports competitions of the same name typically held in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Though this year’s event was canceled, past Las Justas in Orlando have attracted thousands of attendees and featured prominent reggaeton artists.

Business records for O.B.Y. Entertainment, LLC name Irizarry as a managing member. A LinkedIn account under the name “Oby Irizarry” lists him as a promoter and event coordinator with the company for the past nine years.
