WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (WTNH) — Police found two people dead in a Willimantic home Tuesday afternoon during a homicide investigation, which has left the tight-knit neighborhood devastated.

Willimantic police got a call reporting an active assault on Gem Drive just before noon Tuesday.

Upon arrival, Willimantic police found a deceased woman inside the residence.

Officers determined the suspect was still inside the home. During the investigation, a robot was sent into the residence, and it found a second body, who police say was the suspect.

The two people were husband and wife, according to neighbors. News 8 spoke with neighbors who said they never saw anything like this coming.

Neighbor Jose Cruz remembers the couple as, “awesome people, they’re quiet and happy. They say hi to everyone. They smile. Every time you see them, they’re sitting together under their tree enjoying the weather. Whatever they do, they do it together. So it was a big surprise.”

As a precaution, Windham Public Schools said that Sweeney School, Windham Middle School, and Windham Early Childhood Center sheltered in place earlier Tuesday afternoon, and the lockdown was lifted by 2:30 p.m.

The district says all students and staff were safe in the buildings. Dismissal ran on its normal schedule at all three schools, according to the district’s website.

It appears to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to the public at this time, police said.

Connecticut State Police is now investigating this incident.

The scene will be active for several more hours, state troopers said.
